Why we left Australia, and why we came back

16 June 2026 · 4 min read

Zhongtong buses withdrew from Australia during COVID and returned in late 2025. What changed, and what we are doing differently.

Zhongtong buses have been in Australia for over twenty years. We withdrew during COVID. That is not a comfortable thing to write on your own website, and it is the first thing an operator with a long memory will raise.

What happened

Supply chains stopped, borders closed, and supporting vehicles from a factory that could not ship became difficult. Rather than continue badly, the business withdrew.

For operators running our vehicles at the time, that was a genuine problem, and we understand why some of them would be sceptical about our return.

What is different now

Local distribution rather than direct import. Parts held in Australia rather than ordered from the factory when something breaks. A team based here whose working lives have been spent around Australian operators.

And a deliberately narrow range — five models rather than the hundred and forty Zhongtong builds — so that parts holding is realistic and the people supporting them know them properly.

What we are asking

Not that you take our word for it. Ask us what we hold in stock. Ask us what happens when a part is not available. Take a bus on demonstration and run it on your own route before you commit to anything.

The commitment we will make in writing is this: if a delivery date slips, you will hear it from us before you have to ask. A customer told early usually accepts it. One who finds out late rarely does.

And if we are not right for you

We will tell you. There are operations where our buses are not the best answer, and saying so costs us one sale and earns a conversation we would not otherwise get.
