Euro VI explained, without the acronyms

What Euro VI emissions standards mean for Australian bus operators in practice: AdBlue, DPF regeneration, servicing and fuel quality.
Euro VI is the emissions standard most new heavy vehicles in Australia are now built to. What it means practically is more relevant to an operator than the chemistry.
AdBlue
A urea solution injected into the exhaust that converts nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water. You buy it, you top it up, and the vehicle will derate — lose power — if it runs out.
Practically: budget for it, keep it in stock, and make sure drivers know what the warning light means before the bus is doing forty on a highway with a full load.
The particulate filter
A filter that traps soot and periodically burns it off at high temperature. That process needs the exhaust hot enough, which needs sustained running.
This is the one that catches short-run operators. A bus doing brief urban trips with long idles may never get hot enough to regenerate properly, and the filter blocks. If your duty cycle is short runs, ask specifically how the vehicle handles it and whether a parked regeneration is available.
Fuel and oil quality
Euro VI engines need low sulphur diesel and a specified oil grade. Both are standard in Australia, but if you buy fuel in bulk or operate remotely it is worth confirming.
What it means for servicing
More sensors, more that can be diagnosed electronically, and more that requires a workshop with the right diagnostic equipment. This is a reason to prefer running gear with an established Australian service network.
And what it gives you
A meaningfully cleaner vehicle. A Euro VI bus emits a small fraction of the particulates and nitrogen oxides of a Euro III vehicle from the mid-2000s. If you are running vehicles that old, replacing them is the largest single emissions improvement available to you — larger, in many operations, than buying one electric bus.
